What is a chemical?
natural vs. man made
A chemical is any substance consisting of matter. It can be liquid, solid or gas. It can either occur naturally or be created artificially.
A natural chemical is a substance or compound, produced by nature (a living organism), without any human intervention, it can be sourced from plants or animals.
Synthetic chemicals are made by humans using methods different than those nature uses, and these chemical structures may or may not be found in nature.

Working together to Minimise Toxins
The first thing to understand is that we are surrounded by chemicals everywhere! The sofa you sit on, the glass you drink from, the clothes you are wearing, and not to mention, the air you are breathing!
In cosmetics, every ingredient is a chemical & every chemical is an ingredient, these terms are used interchangeably.
There are chemicals around us everywhere and it comes with the territory of living in an industrialised world. And what a great life we live! Morning coffee anyone? Air conditioning in the car? That gorgeous designer handbag? It’s pretty fabulous no doubt!
It’s important to understand, just because a chemical is ‘natural’, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you or the environment. There are many things in nature that we steer clear of due to their high level of toxicity. Arsenic anyone?
We love being informed and making decisions based on that information. Transparency is key here, then the decision is your own to make.
However, before you throw your arms up in the air and decide to go live the monk life for six years in isolation living in nothing but a loin cloth, just remember, the aim is to make mindful choices, not to STOP your life or make drastic, unsustainable changes. Just the simple act of being aware of what you are using, consuming and wearing will allow you to make the best choices for you and your family!
It’s not possible for the average person / family to be 100% chemical free and to be honest, I’m not sure thats the actual goal (hello wine, asprin, baking powder, chalk). Know what your using and make choices based on that.
We must remember that chemical toxicity is a sliding scale, not black and white and whether a chemical is naturally occurring or man-made tells us nothing about it’s toxicity.
